A
new research report by Transparency Market Research offers a
comprehensive evaluation of the global ethylenediamine
market. The
study, titled “Ethylenediamine
(EDA) Market - Global Industry Analysis, Size, Share, Growth, Trends
and Forecast 2014 - 2020”,
is available for sale on the firm’s website.
Ethylenediamine
(EDA) is an organic compound with chemical formula C2H4(NH2)2. It
appears as a colorless clear liquid with a characteristic
ammonia-like odor. Ethylenediamine (EDA) is a strong base and
chelating agent. Ethylenediamine (EDA) can be produced at industrial
scale through two processes. One process involves manufacture from
ammonia and 1,2-dichloroethane under adjusted pressure at a
temperature of 180 °C in an aqueous medium with triethylenetetramine
(TETA) and Diethylenetriamine (DETA) as by products. Another
commercially viable route involves the reaction of ammonia with
ethanolamine in the presence of nickel bed as a heterogeneous
catalyst. It is miscible in water and soluble in most acids including
dilute nitric acid, hydrochloric acid, and sulfuric acid.
Ethylenediamine (EDA) is highly corrosive and reacts rapidly with
moist air to release a white misty vapor which is highly hazardous to
health. Ethylenediamine (EDA) is classified as hazardous chemical
substance and may cause serious health issues even in small
quantities.

Exposure
to ethylenediamine (EDA) can cause severe skin and eye irritation and
may even lead to blindness in cases of high exposure. Ingestion is
highly dangerous and may lead to death if immediate medical care is
not provided. Ethylenediamine (EDA) has high bio-accumulation
potential and is toxic to aquatic life. Furthermore, EDA has a low
flashpoint and easily catches fire.
Ethylenediamine
(EDA) can be used for a variety of applications in wide range of
industries including agrochemical, pharmaceutical, paints and
coatings, fuel and energy, mining and textile among others.
Ethylenediamine (EDA) is used as a building block for a variety of
chemicals. It is used in bleach activators, chelating agents,
corrosion inhibitors, elastomeric fibers, fungicides, fuel additives
and lubricating oils, mineral processing aids, pharmaceuticals,
plastic lubricants, polyamide resins, rubber processing additives,
textile additives and urethane chemicals among others.
The
ethylenediamine (EDA) market is primarily driven by its demand from
growing end-use applications. However, hazardous nature of
ethylenediamine (EDA) and stringent regulations for effective waste
management from manufacturing facilities might hamper the market
growth.
In
terms of geography, Asia Pacific is the largest consumer as well as
producer of ethylenediamine (EDA). Major industrial economies
including China, India, Japan, Australia, and South Korea are the
major producers and consumers of ethylenediamine (EDA) for
application in various industries such as additives in textiles,
corrosion inhibitors in paints and coatings and as building blocks in
the agrochemical, pharmaceutical and polymer industries. Two of the
most populated countries, China and India are situated in Asia. Both
these countries are growing rapidly and witnessing rising disposable
income and purchase power parity of the general population.
This
high growth has lead to growth of end use products of ethylenediamine
(EDA) such as paints and coatings and textiles. North America is
another major consumer for ethylenediamine (EDA) especially in the
chemical industry. Europe is expected to witness comparatively slower
growth than other regions owing to recent economic meltdown and
stringent regulations against hazardous chemical substances. There is
very low scope of capacity expansion in the developed regions of
North America and Western Europe due to over capacities, high land
and labor costs and stringent regulations. China and India are the
best prospects for capacity expansion to serve the growing local
demand.
